Kera’s Values-Driven Guidance for AI Use
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not going away. For the last few years, it has been something we at Kera have regularly talked and written about. Inspired by those conversations, we decided it was time to set some guidance for how we approach AI in our work with clients. Given the rapidly evolving contexts of the AI landscape, we opted for a values-driven guidance versus prescriptive directives on AI use.
Kera’s Values-Driven Guidance for AI Use
We recognize that AI is not neutral, but it can provide perceived benefits that outweigh potential risks. While AI continues to rapidly develop, we have used our values as a guide to approach considerations of AI use.
Openness to Possibility
We are open to experimenting with the use of AI in our practice. Kera staff should feel free to explore AI possibilities, but individuals should reflect upon those experiences with the larger staff, so that we can all weigh in on the implications of AI use in our work/further shape our AI policy.
Adaptability Amid Complexity
We will regularly review and update our AI policy per guidance in the field. At the least, Amanda will review the policy annually to discuss with staff.
We will comply with AI policies outlined by our clients (if they exist): We will review client contracts to adhere to any restrictions or guidance the client organization has in place for themselves.
Honesty in Everything
We will be transparent about our use of AI. If we plan to use AI to support our work with client data, we will describe our planned approach in our scope of work and ask for client approval. Further, we will disclose use of AI in any resulting deliverables.
Given the embeddedness of AI into more and more aspects of our lives, we commit to be conscientious of any unintended uses of AI that may result in actions counter to the above guidelines. Upon awareness, we aim to communicate internally and externally as needed about our AI use and become informed about its limitations.
Generosity of Spirit
Since we are committed to contribute to a world where everyone thrives, we will take a critical approach to using AI in our work. Weighing the costs (e.g., privacy concerns, perpetuating racism, environmental harms, etc.) and benefits (efficiency in repetitive tasks, opportunity as a thought partner, etc.) of AI is complicated and requires critical thought.
