Articulating Impact and Aligning Actions for Teen Programs at the de Young Museum

Client: Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco | Location: San Francisco, CA

We partnered with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco to develop an impact-driven strategy for its Teen Programs.

OVERVIEW

In 2019, we partnered with the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (FAMSF) to develop an impact-driven strategy for its Teen Programs, an important audience for the Museum and not always one that museums have focused on in the past.

Core staff involved in developing Teen Programs at FAMSF had been developing new opportunities for teen audiences but wanted to ensure that these programs were aligned with their desired impact and that the importance of teens as an audience was being communicated across the organization.

APPROACH

Our impact-driven strategy consists of core elements that are tailored to individual clients. For FAMSF, our approach included:

  • Remote workshops, resulting in a framework defining teen audiences and the difference FAMSF wants to make in the quality of their lives through its programming (impact)

  • An Environmental Scan describing opportunities and challenges of the internal and external environments in which Teen programs operate

  • An Impact Plan that describes step-by-step how impact will be achieved through Teen programs

CLIENT TAKEAWAYS

FAMSF staff realized through the impact-driven strategy process how important it was to define specific audiences, even within a demographic age group like teens.  Because they recognized that their resources for Teen Programs were not unlimited, they prioritized teen audiences (and adult supporters of those audiences) based on the opportunities FAMSF was best positioned to provide.

FAMSF also used the Impact Framework that we developed to vet current programs according to their potential impact and resource allocation. Staff began to recognize the need to prioritize programming that was high impact, low resource and/or to determine ways to sustain high resource programming through community partnerships.
