Educational Kit Prototyping for a New Museum in the Middle East

Client: New Museum in the Middle East | Location: Middle East

We led prototyping efforts for an experiment-based educational kit for a New Museum in the Middle East that supported staff learning about evaluation and helped provide insights into how to modify the kits for school children.

OVERVIEW

In 2021, we partnered with a New Museum in the Middle East to prototype an educational kit for school children. The goal of our work was to explore how the kits could be modified to support children’s curiosity to explore and invent on their own while at the same time building museum staff’s capacity to integrate evaluation seamlessly into their work.

APPROACH

Because of the capacity building goal, we designed an onsite study where we managed research efforts remotely from the United States. The process involved:

  • Kera Collective leading the research design and training museum staff remotely

  • Museum staff coordinating data collection and observing, discussing, and surveying students about their experiences using the educational kits

  • Kera Collective analyzing the data to surface trends and actionable insights

CLIENT TAKEAWAYS

We identified several insights from the data collection which positioned the museum to modify the educational kits to support children’s independent exploration and inventiveness. Museum staff also grew their skills and confidence in doing evaluation.

Our process also allowed the museum to seed relationships with local students (and their teachers) that they can continue to grow as they develop the educational kits for use in the classroom and at home.
