Creating an Impact-Driven Strategy for K-12 Programs at The Art Institute of Chicago

Client: The Art Institute of Chicago | Location: Chicago, IL

We partnered with The Art Institute of Chicago to create an impact-driven strategy for their School Programs division.

OVERVIEW

In 2018, we collaborated with the Art Institute of Chicago to use impact-driven strategy to develop a comprehensive plan that articulated the impact of School Programs on target audiences and how the the museum was going to achieve that impact over the next three years.

Our work with the museum emerged out of staff’s desire to align School Programs with the museum’s vision for inclusion and access and a recognition that current offerings were no longer effectively connecting with their K-12 audiences.

APPROACH

We employed an impact-driven strategy that consisted of several interrelated parts, including:

  • An Impact Framework articulating the intended results of School Programs on target audiences

  • A Document Review that established a baseline for School Program’s current impact

  • An Action Plan describing how the Art Institute would achieve impact over the next three years

CLIENT TAKEAWAYS

The museum staff shifted their way of thinking about impact during our work with them from the number of students served to the types of programming that would impact the quality of students’ lives, including making the collections more accessible and relevant. The museum used the Impact Framework that we developed to outline action steps that needed to occur in order to realize outcomes around access, inclusion, and inquiry.

We helped the museum create an Action Plan that outlined five broad goals and associated actions that they would need to take. The museum has used this plan as a roadmap to begin making concrete changes to their student tour program and educator resources to provide equitable access to Chicago Public Schools.
